The Psalm book is one of seven Manichaean manuscripts uncovered at Medinet Madi and acquired by Chester Beatty and Carl Smith (for the Berlin Museums) between and Chester Beatty’s acquisition includes the second volume of the Kephalaia, the larger portion of the Synaxeis, a smaller portion of the Homilies, and the Psalms in two parts. Manichaeism was a dualistic religious system with Christian, Gnostic and pagan elements, founded in Persia in the third century by Manes. This is the first full-length study of the Manichaean Jesus, since the publication of several major Manichaean texts such as the Homilies, Psalm Book and Kephalaia in the s and s.
